The southernmost city in Italy, Ragusa has rediscovered in recent years an exceptional tourist destination, thanks to its Baroque charm is located in old part of town (Ragusa), the beautiful beaches of the coast and numerous other reasons of interest scattered throughout the province. Since 2002 Ragusa has joined the Unesco list, with 18 World Heritage Sites.
We start our route from Ragusa Superior and St. John's Cathedral. It you can admire the majestic facade in late baroque style with three portals, rich in sculptures and carvings, and the interiors decorated in stucco, many of which rococo. And 'possible to visit the Cathedral Museum, open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 12:30 and on odd days of the week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday), also in the afternoon from 15.30 to 18.30.
Also in the area there are important civil architecture: Palazzo Zacco, built in rococo style and today houses the Museum of Ragusane Traditions; Palazzo Schininà di Sant'Elia; Palazzo Sortino Trono, built in 1778: Bertini Palace, built in the late eighteenth century in late baroque style and located in the historic center of Ragusa.
To reach Ragusa you can use the long staircase of Santa Maria, from Ragusa Superiore, at the top, heads down, in the original historic center. A decadent atmosphere dominate it are always very charming, narrow streets and between buildings typical of the urban architecture of the medieval and baroque Sicily. To draw attention to is notably the Duomo di San Giorgio, one of the main architectural attractions of the city and one of the greatest examples of Baroque religious architecture in the world.
Not to be missed during a visit to Ibla is the small Museum of the Cathedral of San Giorgio which preserves the artifacts survived the catastrophic earthquake of 1693 that struck the Noto Valley. The museum is open daily from May to September and on weekends in the winter time with a ticket from € 3.00.
Ancient church, once located in the east and built in the twelfth century, is the only survivor of San Giorgio Portal, in a splendid Catalan Gothic style, considered one of the greatest symbols of Ragusa. It is said that the ancient church of St. George was large and particularly beautiful, also enriched with a well 100 meters high bell tower (at the time among the highest in Europe).
However, they deserve no less interest is the church of Santa Maria d'Itria and the church of Anime del Purgatorio, which are Baroque and mark the border with the city high. Here we also see the Palazzo Nicastro, said the Chancellery because it housed the Municipal Court until 1865.
In via Bocchieri Captain stands Palazzo La Rocca, an eighteenth century building that houses the Provincial Agency for Tourism.
Near Ragusa, about 15 km, is worth visiting the Castle of Donnafugata, a native of the fourteenth century and one of the main attractions of the city. The building, which has the appearance of a real castle, but those of a noble palace, belonged to the wealthy family Arezzo Spuches and still presents a sumptuous neo-Gothic style. Inside there are 120 rooms, not all open to the public, yet all furnished according to the taste of the time and within which you can admire the rich collection of antique clothing and fashion accessories that belonged to Arezzo Trifiletti family.
From Scoglitti in Santa Maria del Focallo the coast ibleo is all a "carpet" of green flags. The parameters taken into account are numerous: the quality of the water close to the shore, the clean sand, the presence of lifeguards. And yet the presence of ice cream parlors and other venues.
